During the fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2009, we funded some of the most innovative research for our three programs in Alzheimer’s disease, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. We were able to invest $6.5 million in research dedicated to better understanding and ultimately defeating these three age-related diseases, thanks to our many loyal donors and their generous gifts.
This year, we continued our public outreach through wider distribution of our educational publications and public service announcements. These efforts increase our value to the community and strengthen our role as a vital resource for affected individuals, their families and friends.
AHAF continues to work hard to make every dollar count in the fight against these terrible diseases. Despite incurring this past year a $4.9 million loss in our investment reserves, as a result of the worldwide economic downturn, we ensured that the majority of funds, 67%, were applied to further our mission through scientific investigations and program activities. We continue to be diligent in our efforts to reduce expenses and to ensure all funds are used efficiently.
In partnership with our donors, AHAF is committed to fulfilling the needs of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma, and to finding the answers that will lead to cures for these life-altering diseases. On behalf of the Board, staff and scientific researchers, I thank you for your steadfast support. Together, we will create a brighter future for all.
