Director of Gift Planning

Scope: The Director of Gift Planning will develop organizational strategies and goals for a newly created national Gift Planning effort and is responsible for all aspects of gift planning with emphasis on cultivation, stewardship, nurturing and solicitation of major planned gifts and planned gift prospects. The Director designs and oversees programs including bequests, charitable trusts, gift annuities, management of appreciated asset gift transfers, and ensures policy and procedures support all AHAF priorities and programs. This position will also oversee the estate administration effort currently generating $5 million annually.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership, goals and direction for newly expanded gift planning marketing and fundraising effort.
- Develop the overall gift planning program with the VP of Development
- Implement and expand on the Planned Giving Program Audit completed in early 2010 by The Sharpe Group.
- Develop both annual and long term plans.
- Facilitate a program that embodies the important elements of both a basic and a sophisticated Charitable Gift Planning Program.
- Develop and recommend appropriate gift planning strategies designed to maximize gifts to AHAF, while first looking out for donor needs.
- Identify, cultivate, steward and (as appropriate) solicit individuals to encourage planned gifts.
- Systematically and opportunistically visit prospects and gift expectancies. Travel expectations: 15 trips annually or approximately 1 trip every 3 weeks once the program gets underway.
- Coordinate with Direct Mail team and Major Donor staff on prospect strategies, collateral materials and educate fundraising staff in gift planning quarterly.
- Work with donor and prospect advisors as appropriate.
- Oversee the Heritage Society gift planning materials and work with Development staff, including Donor Services and Gift Planning Stewardship.
- Keep abreast of current tax laws, statutes, and gift planning materials and vehicles, and maintain continued professional expertise through conferences and seminars/webinars.
- Develop and administer policies and procedures for planned gifts.
- Work with outside consultants (currently including The Sharpe Group) as appropriate.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Exceptional listening skills and ability to build relationships with donors.
- Must enjoy working and spending time with seniors.
- A minimum of 5 years progressively responsible and successful fundraising experience in a mature or complex fundraising organization with significant experience working with seniors.
- Proven track record in building relationships, as well as planning, cultivating and securing bequests and other planned gifts.
- Experience in health care sector preferred.
- Must be innovative, self-motivated and creative, possessing excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.
- Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player.
- Ability and willingness to travel.
- A strategic thinker who has an aptitude for analyzing data.
- Ability to think critically and problem solve individually and in a team environment.
- Bachelor's degree highly preferred.
- Some supervisory experience desirable.
