Check with your ophthalmologist or local hospital to locate a low vision rehabilitation center near you. They can help you through training, devices, and services that are designed especially for the vision impaired.

Association for Education & Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired
An association of those interested in the education, guidance, vocational rehabilitation, or occupational placement of the blind and partially-sighted. The organization conducts certification programs, maintains job exchange services and works with local, state, and national governments on legislation affecting services to the blind and visually impaired.

Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind
Established in 1900, the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind offers programs that enable the blind or visually impaired to obtain and maintain independence at home, school, work, and in the community. Programs and services include early intervention services, training and consultation in assistive technology, career placement services, comprehensive low-vision care, and rehabilitation services.

National Association for Visually Handicapped
Serves as a clearinghouse for information about all services available to the partially sighted from public and private sources. They conduct self-help groups and provide information on large print books, textbooks, and educational tools. A quarterly newsletter and a large print loan library with over 7,000 titles are available to the visually impaired.

NFB-NEWSLINE®
Developed and operated by the National Federation of the Blind, this is a free nationwide telephone newspaper service for the blind and visually impaired. This electronic system receives digital transmissions from newspapers and converts them into synthetic speech that the blind and visually impaired can listen to by dialing a toll-free number.

Recording for the Blind
Founded after World War II to help blinded veterans resume their lives and give them access to college textbooks, this nonprofit organization provides free, recorded educational books to those who cannot read standard printed material because of visual, perceptual, or physical disability. Their Master Library contains over 90,000 titles circulated to students and professionals at all levels.
