The Macular Degeneration Research Program (MDR) is a new program of AHAF. Since 1999, AHAF has awarded over $7.7 million to support basic research into the causes and potential treatments of this disease. MDR is currently supporting 25 biomedical researchers. A complete list of all Macular Degeneration Research grants is available in PDF format for viewing or printing. (You need Acrobat Reader on your computer to view the PDF version. If you do not have this free software, you may download a copy from Adobe).

Eligibility:
AHAF grants are awarded to universities, medical centers, and independent research institutions. Grants are not made to individuals. AHAF provides grants for research at non-profit organizations only.
Applications will be accepted for up to two years of support and for amounts up to $50,000 per year.
In order to be eligible for grant funding from Macular Degeneration Research (MDR), the Principal Investigator (P.I.) must hold the academic rank of assistant professor (or equivalent) or higher. AHAF will not fund grants to more than one investigator from the same laboratory. For the purpose of this restriction, "laboratory" refers to a research team working under the direct supervision or guidance of a faculty member or senior scientist. No P.I. may receive more than one MDR grant, and no single individual may serve as both a P.I. and a co-P.I. on separate MDR grants at the same time. No P.I. may submit more than one grant application per year.
Funds awarded are to be used solely for research. AHAF does not fund institutional overhead, large capital equipment, or construction of buildings. AHAF prefers not to fund the salary of the Principal Investigator. If salary for the P.I. is requested, it must be clearly and thoroughly justified. AHAF will not fund proposals for which duplicate funding has been awarded and accepted, and will not fund portions of grants that are superfluous, irrelevant, or inconsistent with AHAF policies. Applications to MDR are accepted once a year; the Letter of Intent deadline for the 2007 grant year is July 11, 2007.
