Heavy Computer Use May Increase The Risk Of Glaucoma

Researchers from Toho University School of Medicine in Japan recently studied over 10,000 workers from four companies. Long-term computer use as well as the average time working on the computer each day was analyzed. In addition, peripheral vision was measured using a technique called visual field testing. The symptoms of glaucoma are caused by damage to the optic nerve, and there is a gradual and often imperceptible loss of peripheral vision.

Peripheral vision was problematic in over 500 of the participants, and 165 were found to actually have glaucoma. The symptoms of glaucoma are caused by damage to the optic nerve, and abnormal peripheral vision is one of the signs that an eye care professional observes. Heavy computer users who also were nearsighted appeared to be at the highest risk for visual field abnormalities.

It will be important to have this research replicated by other scientists before definitive statements can be made concerning the relationship between computer use and glaucoma.

The study appears in the December issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Healthy Eye Tips for Computer Users:

  1. Take regular breaks from staring at the computer screen.

  2. Adjust your seating so that your eyes are around two feet from the computer screen.

  3. Adjust the computer screen so that it is below eye level.

  4. Have your vision checked regularly by an eye care professional.

  5. Wear glasses or contact lenses if your vision needs correction.
